Before dropping database, back it up and check that its the right one.
Yes I killed the site for a while there... lost about 40 blogs I think? (since most were Tooheys "Im blogging" no great loss for some
)
Should have backed up into Nicks site like I was going to do before... hmmm
Hopefully I can get a better restore from my hosting company, but eh this should be ok for the moment.

Of new hardware in the morning. So my old Eee Pc is getting long in the tooth. Considering that I bought it 3 calendar years ago it has done pretty well for itself I think. It has coded Java and Python. Run MySQL, Sphinx and all sort of applications. It has surfed the web and basicly done everything you could want from a laptop. Well the other day someone at work pointed out an excellent deal on a newer EeePC. This one in fact, http://www.futurelooks.com/asus-eee-pc-1000ha-netbook-review/ and the best part is that it was only $300. Needless to say I am now typing this blog up on it. Its small. Its fast. Its cheap and best of all it has a large amount of battery life and does everything I need from a notebook. So in short I am happy and content with it. Or I will be when I get Linux on it anyway.

Its the only culture some people have. Well that is no longer the case for me anymore (huzzah!), as I went to see the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in Parramatta Park on the weekend. Was an excellent way to spend the night with some excellent Beethoven being played along with parts of Wagners Ring Cycle (if they played the full thing I would still be there probably) and ending with Ride of the Valkyries. All in all excellent stuff and even better because its a 5 minute walk there and back.
And now my SQL Query is finished running back to work.

You know my recent rant about MySQL and getting over the issues with InnoDB and filesize where you cannot have a file larger then 2 gig? Well turns out following my conversion that the system was dog slow. Very very very slow. I finally figured out why.
Looks like its a bug in MySQL. See the solution I found was to specify the size of each of the database files. Now this is all well and good, but when you start MySQL it does its start process then says that it failed. So naturally you start it again and guess what, it says the same thing. You check the logs and all seems ok, so you start again and this time it works. However there is an issue. If you run the following "ps aux | grep mysql" I discovered multiple instances of MySQL running. Huh? Didnt they error out? Well it turns out no. What happens is that when it starts up the first thing it does is check your config and if the files you specified dont exist it runs off and creates them. This is fine and good, but what then happens is that the startup message shows that it errored out. However in the background its still creating those files, which can take a few mins if they are large. So if you start another instance it then tries to create the files which the first instance hasnt gotten around to yet. Im sure you can guess what happens then.
Quite annoying. So I killed all of the instances, deleted the files, restarted mysql let it create the files and waited. Even with the error message it comes up fine and is now serving things as you would expect. Quite frustrating though.

Yes I have been on ebay again. But I swear nothing crazy this time. I bought a blu ray copy of The Dark Knight, and since I was in the mood for Batman picked up a Playstation copy of Batman while I was at it. I havent played either yet, but since they were half price each (actually maybe 1/3 each) I figured it to be a good deal.
So other then that I did something that every nerd dreads. I decided to clean my keyboard. I have never cleaned it properly since I got it back in... 2005 I think (confirmed, http://www.boyter.org/?component=content&option=permalink&id=66). It has been a while anyway. So last night I took a photo of the layout (makes it easier to put it back together), popped out all the keys and got to work with cleaning agents and paper. I actually cleaned out every key individually and the result is something I am no longer afraid to touch.
What we really need are keyboards you can run through the dishwasher. Now that would be awesome.
